40 years after it was released, the sounds from the Roland TR-808 drum machine remain some of the most popular drum sounds ever. You hear them all over popular music. They absolutely dominate the drum sound palette of most hip-hop producers. As a producer, I rarely use 808 drum sounds in my tracks. No shade intended, but for the styles of music that I create, most of the time they simply don’t fit.

This release is that rare exception for me.

Every year on August 8th the electronic music world celebrates “808 Day”(8/08, get it?). Producers all over the world share 808-based tracks, sound designers give away 808 sounds, and various companies publish stories about the many iconic artists and memorable tracks that have featured the 808. Back in 2019, I decided I would join in just for fun. I challenged myself to see what I could come up with in 60 minutes using the 808 - 75% of this track was done in that first hour. I shared it on social media and got some positive feedback on it. That inspired me to go back and polish it up into a complete song. It turned out really good, but I never released it.

Sonically, the track really doesn’t fit the direction I’m going in as an artist, but after bumpin’ this in my car for a year and a half I realized that I like this track way too much to not share it. Plus, I need to release some of this music I’m sitting on as I work on developing my sound.

So….. here it is. “Light It Up”.
